Is reading a passive form of studying ? well the answer lies in your perspective and how you utilize your reading time. With a slight change in perspective one can effectively utilize reading as a vital tool for success. The question here is are you really engaged in the text or even trying to question the text , if yes then you should have been in better position already. This article will give you a better insight on how to read actively.
scientifically speaking the core here is when we are actively engaged in reading, we are activating various regions of the brain.

Active reading still persists to be a concept beyond the scope of a visual diagram or any learning tool. simply putting it is when the visual input is recognized, perceived, decoded by the parietal and temporal lobe then is analyzed by the prefrontal lobe leading to concept building , then comes the long term retention this is when all of this information is transferred from short term to long term in the hippocampus.
there is no end to the advantages of active reading as it also helps in building diverse neuronal pathways , train the brain to think in multiple ways , and much more leading to a higher cognitive functionality which is often considered as a symbol of intellect.
How to kickstart the active mode of reading , well there are two simple methods which can be used this may differ according to the text read.
1. Being curious for what , why , how and also look for the meaning of all foreign words / those who need proper defination despite us knowing it. 2. Trying to visualize if its a cycle, structure or process , later recheck your own visualised structure with the existing one , you may re question if yours isn’t matching it will sharpen your understanding.
Other tips though not very direct but can help in acheiving better results are – 1. Having clear mindset , study space , with organised set of stationary , notebooks etc. 2. Using either AI for your doubts or noting them if needed and then clearing from the tutor,
Going in depth of the concept as much as your curiosity permits.
Here is an Example
The protective meninges and csf drainage
The central nervous system is protected by yhree connective tissue layers known as the meninges. Duramater ( tough mother ) – the outermost , think and durable layer. Arachnoid Mater (spiderlike) – lying beneath the duramater , it has a delicate web like structure, the cerebrospinal fluid circulates in the subarachnoid space beneath it. Piamater (delicate mother) – the innermost , highly vascularised and very delicate layer that intimately adheres to the surface of the brain. The constant pressure of the circulating csf requires continous reabsorbtion into the venous blood. this essential drainage occurs through the dural venous sinuses , as they collect the deoxygenated blood from brain and drain it into the internal jugular veins.
Active reading demosntration
step 1 trying to visualize it , in this case just connecting the dots

step 2 look for foreign terms here , dural venous sinus , then look for what it is , endothelium – lined venous channel located between the two layers of brain , covering the duramater, about how you may question the functioning.
further refining all the loop holes and having advance knowledge one may reach to the folowing most refined image

you may work more on the circulation of the csf , the outcome shown above is the result of multiple searches , and question which would come if you are deeply engaged in the text or say the process of learning. Crictics may say that a diagram of meningeal layers and csf circulation are just a search away , well it is but gaining knowledge from ready made resources wont help you develope those neuronal pathways , and your brain may not function rapidly as it losses its ability to question , explore and its growth is just stunted.
The possible outcome of active reading is you have more detailed understanding of the theory , youb may build your own basic diagram relating to the text it leads to a unforgetfull experiance , however it is essential to get your ideas backed up by what exists in reality. This is a high yeilding tool and it comes with the idea of maintaing consistent study routine and appreciating how surpring the outcomes can be as reading becomes an exciting puzzle.
Now go find a textbook , open a desired topic and let your curiosity kick in , leading to your most procuctive active reading session yet.
